Want to lead Massachusetts's transition to
Enjoy all of the benefits of simple solar ownership.
After kicking off with a round of Tea, the Massachusetts Solar Party is now underway.
In the land of the Patriots, thousands of homeowners in Massachusetts have gone solar and switched away from foreign energy sources in the past few years. With some of the absolute best solar economics of any state in the U.S., Massachusetts is a leader in solar energy adoption and has set the standard for its neighbors across New England.
The economics of solar in Massachusetts are among the best in the entire country due to the presence of Renewable Energy Credits (commonly known as "RECs"), which allow local utilities to meet their mandated renewable energy requirements. The average solar system in Massachusetts typically creates 8-10 Renewable Energy Credits each year, with RECs currently valued over $250 each! These credits go to the owner of the system, so owning your system directly – with a Dividend Solar EmpowerLoan, for example – is incredibly important in Massachusetts.
Our customers in Massachusetts have installed home solar panels for a variety of reasons: to save money from Day 1, to help the local environment, to gain independence from the utility companies, to show off their sweet new panels to their neighbors. All of them have taken advantage of one of Massachusetts' great natural resources: the sun.
With great incentives and some of the most expensive utility prices in the country, Massachusetts is a perfect place for solar energy to shine.

What Our Massachusetts Solar Customers Are Saying
I looked into solar energy services because I wanted to protect myself from rate hikes. It's been running three weeks and it's been good so far. I'm looking forward to the first bill that includes an entire month. Enrolling with Dividend Solar was easy because I really didn't do anything. I also like the dashboard, it's nice to be able to log in and see everything in one place.
Tim Gardner, MA
I'm 100% satisfied with my decision to go solar. Given my high utility bills, it made absolute sense financially to go solar with Dividend Solar. Their process was fairly easy and I didn't have any major problems to solve.

Massachusetts is one of the top states to go solar and maximize your savings. Aside from saving money on your electric bill, there are two other key incentives that help solar in Massachusetts make sense: 1) the 30% federal tax credit, and 2) Renewable Energy Credits.
First, the federal government offers a 30% tax credit which is available in all 50 states. This credit is applied to the federal taxes you pay each year, thereby lowering the net cost of your solar system. This credit is a great benefit of going solar: money that you would otherwise pay in taxes can now be used to own your solar system sooner. It is important to note that you can only reap the benefits of the federal tax credit* – which can cover up to 30% of your system's cost – if you own your system directly (instead of leasing it or choosing a Power Purchase Agreement). With the Dividend Solar EmpowerLoan, you own your system and you get all of the economic benefits of going solar in Massachusetts.
Secondly, Massachusetts offers Renewable Energy Credits which can generate tens of thousands of dollars of cash savings in addition to your utility bill savings. For more information on RECs, please see the next question!

In Massachusetts, the typical solar energy system will produce between 8-10 megawatt hours of electricity each year, and every 1 megawatt hour of production also generates 1 Renewable Energy Credit ("RECs"). RECs can be sold to utility companies which allows them to meet their required quota of renewable energy production. It is very simple to sell RECs, and we offer an easy way to lock in REC payments for 5 or 10 years with a contract through one of our partners.
From a homeowner's perspective, Renewable Energy Credits are an additional source of savings that can add thousands of dollars of cash savings each year – on top of your utility bill savings! These RECs are a key driver of the economic benefits of going solar in Massachusetts, and help homeowners save money immediately.
The combination of Renewable Energy Credits, the 30% Federal Tax Credit, and the ability to offset the high cost of electricity from your utility company make going solar in Massachusetts a home run (either over the Green Monster or the Pesky Pole).
When you begin to generate your own solar power, your utility bill can drop significantly. How much you can save will depend on the size of your solar system, your electricity usage, your current utility rates, and other factors. Our team and partners can design a system for you using remote assessment tools, and can present you with a system designed specifically for your home to give you a sense of your expected solar savings.
Working with the best solar installers in Massachusetts, Dividend Solar offers its customers a better, simpler way to go solar and save money on utility bills.

At a high level, energy from the sun is collected by the solar panels on your roof and converted into electricity. This electricity from the panels, which are made up of of photovoltaic cells, is in "direct current" (DC) form, which needs to be converted into "alternating current" (AC) electricity that you currently use in your home. This AC/DC conversion is made by a component called an inverter, which is included with your system. The inverter then channels the usable electricity into your existing power meter, and it can then be used to power your home. When your system generates energy in excess of your home's needs, that extra power is sent back into the grid (a process called "net metering") which in turn lowers the cost of your utility bill. Clean energy + savings!
Since the amount of power your solar system generates is a direct result of sunlight, it will produce slightly less energy when the weather is cloudy, and will not produce any energy at night. Your home will continue to be connected to your local utility grid, so that you can automatically begin to draw power from the grid whenever you need it. You won't experience any power interruptions; the switch between solar system power and the utility grid happens seamlessly, with nothing to do on your end.

Our customer-focused Installers can quickly evaluate your home's suitability for solar by examining satellite photos of your property, with no cost to understand if solar is right for you.
The cost of a solar power system will vary depending on its size, location, your roof layout and other factors, but rooftop solar systems typically cost between $15,000 and $50,000, with the average being about $30,000 for a 6.5kW (6,500 watts) system. Solar energy systems are durable and built to withstand the wear & tear of outdoor conditions. Your system will operate best when it is clean and in direct sunlight, so periodic rinsing is recommended. Seasonal inspections and trimming nearby trees will ensure your system is delivering optimal energy production. In case you encounter any issues with your system's performance, Dividend Solar's Installation Partners include operations & maintenance services, a 15-year warranty on all repairs and defects, and a system performance guarantee with every EmpowerLoan as part of our service to you.
Solar energy systems are also extremely reliable. Solar has proven to be a dependable source of energy for large office buildings, large retailers and governmental agencies, supplying large quantities of energy. Some of the largest organizations in the world have buildings powered by solar energy, including eBay, Walmart, and the US Air Force. Dividend Solar has incredibly high quality standards and partners with Installers who only use the best equipment – we build your power system to last, and stand by our quality with the system performance guarantee.
Performance monitoring is one of the coolest parts of owning your solar energy system. Each Dividend Solar system includes a special meter that measures your system's solar power production in real time. When you visit the EmpowerPortal, you can see exactly how much electricity you have generated and you can track the production over time.
In addition, the system performance data is also sent to our database, allowing us to proactively detect problems that may be reducing your system's performance. We consistently monitor the actual performance of your system to ensure that it is producing at least 85% of the power guaranteed by your Installer. If your system's performance falls consistently below that level, we'll send an Installer to fix the problem at no additional cost to you.
Now is an ideal time to switch to solar. Solar power can dramatically reduce your utility bill and will protect you from rising utility rates for years to come. In addition, federal, state and local governments are offering generous rebates and incentives to go solar. The federal government offers a 30% tax credit on federal income taxes which has been extended for five years.
Our Installers provide in-depth assistance on all required tax submission forms, which includes identifying all of the potential rebates, acquiring the relevant forms, and preparing the materials for you to sign and submit. We strive to make going solar a hassle-free experience at every stage of the process, including your tax submission.*
